Sennelier Soft Pastels: Sennelier extra-fine soft pastels are the Rolls Royce of pastels at a surprisingly affordable price. The intensity of their pigments and their exceptional softness will be appreciated by anyone who works in pastels. Made the same way, by hand since 1900, they were the favorites of Degas. The purest pigments are mixed with minimal amounts of natural binders to yield lightfast, watersoluble pastels. They are highly concentrated and so soft that a gentle stroke delivers a solid, powerful line of brillant color. Made in France. The Art Box carries sets. The entire range of 552 colors is available by special order.

Unison Pastels: Probably the most talked about pastel for the past few years, these handmade pastels come from the studio of John Hersey in the hills of Northumberland, England and have taken artists by surprise. They are incredibly soft, many containing no binders at all, being solid pigment rolled with a little water and allowed to air dry. Others use a little weak starch or gum to hold them together without interfering with the color. No other pastels flow so smoothly into the tooth of the paper. Of course, they are expensive, they're virtually solid pigment, and they are so soft it can be hard to control the flow of the color, but they'll make you smile. Made in England.
